Yunfeng Lu obtained his PhD from
professor C. Jeff Brinker and Professor Gabriel P. Lopez at the University of New Mexico in 1998 and became a Sandia postdoc.
In 2000, he worked at Applied Materials Inc. as a senior
process engineer. He joined Tulane University as an
assistant professor in 2001, promoted to endowed professor with
tenure in 2005,and moved to UCLA in 2006.

Dr. Lu has won the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (2004) "for pioneering work in the synthesis of novel porous and composite nanoscale materials and their application to sensing and detection in support of the country's national security mission, and for excellence in teaching and mentoring graduate students." The awardees were invited to the White House, see

Dr. Lu has won the 2004 DOE Defense Programs Early Career Scientist and Engineer Award.
