Frequently Asked Questions

and Other Stuff You Might Like to Know About ESUC

What is ESUC?

ESUC stands for Engineering Society of the University of California (Los Angeles). It is the engineering student organization that houses all of the various Engineering and Technical societies at UCLA.

The Engineering Society was founded in 1946 to fulfill these goals:

How can I get in touch with ESUC?

You can email the ESUC officers at esuc@seas.ucla.edu or stop by the ESUC lounge.

Where is the ESUC lounge?

The ESUC Lounge is located in 5800E Boelter Hall, right across the hall from the Cafe by the SEAS on the fifth floor.

What's at the ESUC lounge?

The Lounge has FREE LASER PRINTING for ESUC members, three IBM 486s, 3 Macs, some Unix terminals, extensive files containing old tests and homeworks from many engineering classes, a foosball table, comfy couches, music (bring your own CDs), and usually friendly (if sometimes weird) folks.

When is the ESUC lounge open?

The Lounge is open approximately 10am to 5pm weekdays, but as long as an ESUC officer is present, the Lounge will be open. (So if you can talk an officer into opening the doors for you, or sticking around, you're set.)

Can I join ESUC?

You bet. Any UCLA student with a measly five bucks can join. (UCLA Faculty and Staff can also join.)

How do I join ESUC?

Come by the ESUC lounge and fill out an application. After you've filled it out, yell "Is there an ESUC officer in the house?!" and in a few minutes, someone will disengage themself from the foosball table, take your $5 and give you a membership card.

Why should I join ESUC?

Some of the resources available at the Lounge are only for ESUC members. Specifically, laser printing, use of the computers in the office, test files, and the foosball table are for members only. ESUC members can also participate in elections and run for office.

What's foosball?

Foosball is a highly additive game, also known as table soccer. It has the same aim as real soccer: use your team to get the ball into your opponents' goal. The rules can vary depending on who you're playing, but NO SPINNING the rods! All ESUC members can play. Try to exercise good manners in letting others play.

What's a TechComm?

TechComm stands for Technical Committee. TechComms are groups contained within ESUC that are organized to further a common interest in an aspect of engineering. Most of the TechComms are affiliates of national engineering organizations. The TechComms have activities such as speakers on new developments in their respective fields, field trips to industrial and governmental firms in the area, and participation in regional and national meetings and conventions of the affiliate society. Members thus have the opportunity of observing engineering practice and of making valuable contacts. To find out more about the TechComms, take a look at the listing on the
main ESUC Page.

Can I run for office?

Yes. Any ESUC student member can run for office. To find out more about the offices of the Engineering Society, check out the ESUC Constitution and Bylaws.

Cafe by the SEAS

The Cafe is run by the students of the School of Engineering and its profits provide most of the funding for the ESUC budget. The Cafe is located at 5800W Boelter Hall, across the hall from the ESUC Lounge on the fifth floor.
