New MSDNAA Access

On July 1st, students and faculty eligible to download MSDNAA software will do so using Courseweb.seas.ucla.edu. You may login to Courseweb using your BOL login ID or SEASnet account. Once you have logged in, click on "My Courseweb" and look for the "Software Download" link. From there you will be taken to the familiar MSDNAA software menu. Clicking on the appropriate link will take you directly to Microsoft's download program and to available software. For questions or assistance using this new process, please email msdnaa-admin@seas.ucla.edu.

New Microsoft Offering

Microsoft has launched a new offering for university and high school students called "DreamSpark". Software and training are offered at no cost to students. In order to take advantage of DreamSpark, create a "Windows Live" account using your Bruin OnLine email address and then login to the "DreamSpark" website.

"DreamSpark" is only available to students at UCLA. Also, SEASnet does not offer support for this program. All questions regarding "DreamSpark" should be directed to the "DreamSpark" support page of their website.

UCLA's Software Central Academic Pricing

UCLA departments and faculty can obtain software from UCLA Software Central for up to 92% less than standard academic pricing. Please check with Software Central first when you need to acquire software. A list of the software available from Software Central can be found at http://www.softwarecentral.ucla.edu/product_list.htm.

Campus Anti-Virus Program (Sophos) End-of-Life Notification

Sophos has notified campus that December 31, 2008 is their end-of-life date for supporting Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 95/98/NT. Campus has negotiated with Sophos to obtain a one year extension of this date, so UCLA will continue to have this coverage through December 31, 2009. Users of these software systems will need to uninstall Sophos, upgrade their systems, and install the new version prior to the December 31, 2009 deadline to ensure the machine meets UCLA Policy 401: Minimum Security Standards for Network Devices.

Email Account Phishing Scams

Please be aware that the University is being subjected to multiple user account "phishing" scams. These phishing scams arrive in your email inbox asking you to respond to the message with your private logon information.

BOL and SEASnet will NEVER ask you for your password either in writing or over the phone.

If you did reply to an email with your private logon information, you should immediately change your password and then contact the helpdesk.

Campus Approved Legal Alternatives to File-Sharing

UCLA offers legal alternatives for online music and video services to the campus community. We encourage you to explore these services as an ideal means of acquiring digital entertainment while avoiding the risks, viruses and malware associated with illegal file sharing. Information about this program is at http://www.getlegal.ucla.edu.
