What are linuxapps machines and who can use these machines?

• As of 10/9/2009, linuxapps consists of 3 machines:
  • linux01.seas.ucla.edu
  • linux02.seas.ucla.edu
  • linux03.seas.ucla.edu
• If you login to linuxapps.seas.ucla.edu, you will be logged into one of the machines.
• You may use individual hostname listed above if you want, but we may remove a machine temporarily from the linuxapps group for maintenance so just try another machine in that case.
• You need your SEAS account to access these machines, and you should be enrolled in one of the classes that are allowed to access linuxapps.

How to access linuxapps from SEASLAB, with XWindow

• Double-click the linuxapps.bat icon on the screen
• It will do:
  • start Exceed
  • start ssh client to one of the linuxapps machines
  • ssh client is set up to do X11 forwarding
• Enter your SEAS account loginname and password
• Once successfully logged in, your XWindow environment should be already set up, and you may open another window by doing:
  xterm &

How to access linuxapps from your own PC, with XWindow

• Install PuTTY SSH client if you don't already have it
• Install Xming and Xming-fonts if you don't already have it
• Start Xming
  • Start -> All Programs -> Xming -> Xming
  • Xming icon will appear at the bottom right of your screen.
• (first time only) Set up PuTTY for linuxapps
  • double-click putty.exe icon
  • enter Host Name: linuxapps.seas.ucla.edu
  • enter Saved Sessions: linuxapps
  • click Save
  • expand SSH menu on the left, click X11, check Enable X11 forwarding (See X11 Forwarding)
  • scroll up the Category menu, click Session
  • click Save
  • click Window, Appearance
  • Font settings, Change, select Courier New, 10-point (or whichever you like), OK
  • click Session, Save
  • click Open
• Use the linuxapps session you configured above, it will work with Xming to display the graphics on your PC.
  • double-click putty.exe icon
  • under Saved Sessions, double-click linuxapps that you had set up
  • window will open (linuxapps.seas.ucla.edu - PuTTY)
  • you can login with your SEAS account
  • Note the DISPLAY environment variable will be set automatically, and

How to access linuxapps from another UNIX host, with XWindow

ssh -Y linuxapps.seas.ucla.edu -l jbruin

• -Y enables trusted X11 forwarding
• -l jbruin not necessary if the loginname was the same between the two hosts
