SEASnet Wireless Network Access

Wireless Network Access Now Available in HSSEAS

SEASnet's wireless network is designed to provide network connectivity and services to students, staff and faculty that is consistent with wireless implementations elsewhere at UCLA. This means that SEASnet is coordinating its network implementation with other units on campus to help ensure that one simple wireless configuration is sufficient to access available wireless resources.

While we are working hard to extend wireless connectivity uniformly throughout our buildings, it can be difficult due to construction differences that may interfere with signal strength in certain areas. Please report areas where signal strength is weak or unavailable to wireless@seas.ucla.edu.

Current areas of coverage include all of Engineering IV and Boelter Hall (including the Science and Engineering Library) with the exception of the Computer Science department which is managed by the CS Department Staff. Information about the CS wireless network can be found here. HSSEAS is planning wireless installations in the Engineering I Replacement Building.

Please be sure that your machine has been patched before bringing it up on the SEASnet wireless network. Information can be found at: http://www.seas.ucla.edu/virus

What is needed?

  1. An 802.11b compliant wireless card for your comptuer and appropriate driver.
  2. A UCLA logon ID account for authentication with the campus VPN server.
  3. VPN client software for your computer. You may obtain the VPN client software and configuration information at http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/vpn/.

What do I do to connect?

  1. Install the 802.11b wireless card and configure the driver in your computer.
  2. Configure the driver to use UCLAWLAN as the network name (SSID).
  3. Configure the driver to get its wireless IP address and DNS servers from the network using DHCP.

With this minimal configuration, you will find that you have web browser access to UCLA networks* (but not off campus access) and secure shell (ssh) connectivity to anywhere. For full network service resources continue with the following:

  1. Once the VPN client has been installed, connect to the campus VPN server, vpn.ucla.edu, and login using your UCLA logon ID.

Once your connection to the VPN server has been established you have complete access to network services including the ability to browse off campus.

Windows Vista Issues

*Windows Vista users may have problems obtaining a working IP address. If your wireless IP address is 169.254.x.x, this means the computer cannot access the server to obtain an IP. See Microsoft Knowledgebase Article 928233 on how to fix this.

Where are the access points?

Boelter WiFi Hotspots

If you have questions or problems please send email to wireless@seas.ucla.edu or contact the SEASnet help desk in 2684 Boelter Hall, x66864.
