Research Overview

Limited fresh water sources on the planet create the need to produce fresh water from non-traditional water sources.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'>  Membrane separation processes can efficiently produce high quality water from such non-traditional waters.  Compared with microfiltration (MF)= and ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes have dense separation layer, which enables RO/NF membranes to retain salts, minerals, organics, and solutes.  However, operation pressures in RO/NF processes are substantially hi= gher than in MF/UF processes.  Memb= rane fouling is a major performance limiting problem for RO/NF membrane separations beca= use it drives operating pressures (and energy consumption) even higher.  Much research has been performed to understand membrane fouling and to improve membrane material properties to = make them less susceptible to fouling.  Conventional research has focused on functionalizing the surface of polymeric RO/NF membranes with hydrophilic polymers or alter membrane charge (more negative, positive, or neutral) based on different expected fouling mechanisms.

 

I am currently synthesizing composite (RO/NF) membranes and characterizing them through a number of advanced microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including AFM, FTIR, SEM, and EDX.  At right is an AFM image= of a traditional polyamide composite RO membrane.  My ultimate research objective is = to make low fouling RO/NF membranes in a revolutionary way through use of nanotechnology.  By engineerin= g the membranes to possess specific physicochemical properties (size, charge, hydrophilicit= y, etc), we hope to produce a new class of desalination membranes with enhanced water permeability, solute rejection, and fouling resistance, which means higher water quantity and quality with less energy consumption.<= /span>
