Research Overview


Reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) are among the most important and versatile processes for water production, reclamation, and desalination.  However, scalin= g and fouling present serious limitations for RO/NF processes such as higher ener= gy consumption, reduced water quality, and low water recovery.  My research is focused on understa= nding and controlling scale formation in reclamation of high-salinity, inland alternative waters such as Alamo= River and Colorado River= waters.  At right is shown a p= icture of the Alamo River.  This water is full of organics, colloids, and clay particles, and has a TDS of ~2,000 mg/L with high concentrations of calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfate. 

 

We have developed a laboratory scale membrane desalination system to investiga= te membrane scaling in RO and NF separations used to treat these alternative waters.  Both real river water= s and model solutions are used to identify limiting scaling mineral = ions (calcium carbonates, calcium sulfate, etc.) and the influence of operating condition= s on process performance.  Using diagnostic techniques like SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and EDX (ener= gy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy) in combination with rapid laboratory scale membrane desalination experiments we can obtain valuable information about = the limiting recovery attainable in full scale RO/NF membrane processes.  The SEM images at right are of an organic fouling layer and calcium sulfate (gypsum) mineral deposits formed = on a reverse osmosis membrane tested in our laboratory. 

 

The next step in my research is to design a low-pressure, hybrid membrane proce= ss for selective removal of calcium ions from these alternative waters.
