As an undergraduate, I majored in metallurgical engineering at Yonsei University from 1983 to 1987 and continued my study at the graduate school of my alma mater from 1987 to 1989.

I performed my military service in the 3rd Military Academy during six months.

Since I joined Korea Institute of Science & Technology (KIST) in 1990, I have worked for Division of Materials as a research scientist and have participated in more than 30th national projects for 10 years.

I completed Ph. D degree at Yonsei University in 1998. I specialized in materials characterization by utilizing some analytical techniques especially convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) method in TEM.

Through my research experience in KIST, I have a lot of opportunities to learn advanced technology and knowledge of Material Science. Depending on the projects, I have been involved in various research topics mainly including superplastic alloy, intermetallic compound, fabrication of fine metal fiber through rapid solidification process and magnetic sensor.

Recently, by using the principle of atomization and perturbation of liquid-gas interface, the simple process to fabricate micro solder ball for BGA package has been developed and transferred to the industry successfully.

The research topic I am going to study in UCLA is the cross-talk isolation which refers to the interference of digital and analog signals when they are integrated on the same Si chip. Although various measures have been used to minimize the problem such as guard rings, SOI, differential input and innovative circuit designs, the achievable results from them are far from meeting the requirement of industry. The goal of the research is to develop a Si VLSI compatible process module that will allow the incorporation of semi-insulating porous Si regions into Si chips.

The part I can contribute to includes characterization of porous Si materials, fabrication of isolation structure and benchmark measurements of cross-talk isolation.
