Topics include recombinant DNA technology, molecular research tools, manipulation of gene expression, directed mutagenesis and protein engineering, DNA-based diagnostics and DNA microarrays, antibody and protein-based diagnostics, genomics and bioinformatics, isolation of human genes, gene therapy, and tissue engineering.

Lecture. Integration of molecular and engineering techniques in modern biotechnology. Cloning of protein-coding gene into plasmid, transformation of construct into E. coli, production of gene product in bioreactor, downstream processing of bioreactor broth to purify recombinant protein, and characterization of purified protein.
