B.  The California Semiconductor Industry

The Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Industry is a California creation.  This is best illustrated by the pie chart in Figure 2. Of the estimated 1261 companies in the U.S. engaged in this business, almost half are located in California (537). Furthermore, as shown in Figure 3, California’s share of this business is larger than any other nation in the world. In California, these companies employ approximately 50,000 workers (17% of total employment in the electronics industry), and account for roughly $20 billion in revenues. The semiconductor equipment and materials industry has been growing even faster than the semiconductor industry as a whole. Here in California, companies engaged in this business have increased employment by an astonishing 75% since 1993. Moreover, they expect to double in size by the year 2003, adding another 50,000 jobs.
